Performance Deep Dive
π¨ Durability, Scuffs & Pet Claw Friction
Laminate provides superior overall defence against mechanical surface damage. Its crystal-hard top layer is specifically designed to resist pet claws without scratching, handle heavy furniture without leaving deep indentations, and eliminate the tracking paths that occur over time in busy spaces.
Carpet handles impact through cushioning, but it is vulnerable to other types of wear. Heavy furniture can leave deep, permanent indents in the pile, while cats and dogs can snag loose loops in woven varieties. Additionally, high-traffic corridors will naturally flatten out and experience fibre compression over years of use.
π§ Water Resistance & Stain Security
Laminate holds a clear advantage when dealing with spills. Modern high-quality boards feature specialised water-repellent click joints that prevent topical spills from penetrating into the core board for hours. Accidental drops can simply be wiped or damp-mopped away cleanly without leaving marks.
Carpet acts like a massive sponge for liquid accidents. Unless you use a highly synthetic, bleach-cleanable polypropylene yarn, liquids will quickly absorb into the core fibres and the underlay below. This makes stain removal difficult and can lead to trapped odours or moisture damage if left unchecked.
π¦Ά Comfort, Warmth & Indoor Acoustics
Carpet wins easily on comfort. Its soft pile naturally traps ambient air, creating an insulating layer that helps keep rooms warmer and reduces heat loss through the floor. It also dampens sound, absorbing room echo, voices, and footstep noise perfectlyβmaking it ideal for creating quiet, relaxing spaces upstairs.
Laminate is a hard, resonant surface. Even when installed over premium acoustic underlayment, walking on it with hard-soled shoes can produce a slight clicking sound. It also lacks the natural, cosy underfoot warmth of a thick pile of textiles.
