💧 Water Resistance & Subfloor Protection
Both products are entirely waterproof synthetic structures that will not swell or rot if exposed to surface moisture. However, sheet vinyl gains a minor technical edge in localised wet areas due to its seamless roll format. Without joints in the floor plan, water cannot find a path to seep into the adhesive or the subfloor below.
LVT is completely waterproof at a component level, but it relies on tight plank joints. In situations involving standing water or minor flooding, moisture can slowly penetrate the micro-seams between planks if left unaddressed, potentially compromising the subfloor bond underneath over time.
🔨 Scratch, Tear & Impact Resistance
This is where LVT dominates. Its commercial-grade wear layer (typically 0.55mm to 0.70mm thick) is hardened against severe mechanical stress. It resists deep scratches from pet claws, scuffs from heavy shoes, and the continuous rolling friction of furniture castor wheels.
Sheet vinyl features a softer, more pliable cushion profile. While comfortable underfoot, it is vulnerable to sharp impacts. Heavy dropped kitchen utensils, unprotected appliance dragging, or high stiletto heels can permanently puncture or tear the surface vinyl membrane.
🦶 Underfoot Comfort, Warmth & Acoustics
Because sheet vinyl incorporates an integrated foam, felt, or textile backing cushion layer, it feels inherently softer, warmer, and more forgiving under bare feet. It naturally absorbs room echo and footstep noise without requiring specialised premium underlays.
🔄 Localized Damage & Repair Framework
If an accident occurs and an area of the floor is deeply gouged or scorched, LVT offers an easy repair pathway. For click installations, planks can be unclicked to the affected zone; for glue-down installations, the single damaged tile can be heated, scraped out, and cleanly replaced with a fresh spare plank.
Sheet vinyl is incredibly difficult to spot-repair cleanly. A deep tear or permanent burn requires cutting out a square section and splicing in a matching patch, which inevitably leaves visible join lines that compromise the aesthetic and the waterproof barrier.
