💧 Stain Security & Chemical Cleaning
Polypropylene is virtually unbeatable for pure stain defence. Because the fibre is chemically inert and non-porous, substances like red wine, coffee, or mud cannot penetrate the yarn core. It tolerates vigorous scrubbing and diluted bleach, making stain removal straightforward for busy households.
Wool features a natural, delicate protein composition. While its protective oils fend off light spills long enough to dab them away, it absorbs liquids over time. Aggressive chemical cleaners or scrubbing will permanently strip wool fibres, meaning it demands dedicated, pH-neutral speciality cleaning products.
🔨 Crush Resistance & Appearance Retention
Wool retains its appearance beautifully over a long lifecycle. Its natural elastic memory allows the yarn to withstand heavy furniture pressure and high-impact traffic areas, expanding and recovering without snapping or matting down into permanent dark paths.
Polypropylene lacks this inherent fibre memory. Under sustained weight or heavy daily foot traffic, synthetic fibres are prone to flattening down over time. Once matted down, the fibres cannot easily recover, leaving high-use hallways looking prematurely worn or “shiny” from friction.
🔥 Thermal Insulation, Comfort & Safety
Wool is a premier natural insulator. Its complex, microscopic structure traps vast amounts of air, noticeably reducing heat loss through the floor and stabilising indoor humidity levels. Additionally, wool is naturally flame-retardant, smouldering safely rather than melting when exposed to a stray ember or a dropped ember.
Polypropylene provides good standard underfoot cushioning, but it lacks wool’s deep, regulating thermal efficiency. It also carries a low melting point, meaning dragging heavy items across it quickly can cause localised friction scars or permanent melting marks.
